I’m the same with Polish. I was fluent as a child and would even come back to England after the holidays only speaking Polish but when I became a teenager I felt embarrassed to be different. I stopped speaking. My mother did the exact same thing as your mother and I rebelled also. Now as the world has become more connected it is something seen as cool. I just wish it had been that way when I was a teenager but it is something I will work on.
